Letter from the Associate Dean,
Dr. David Locker,
Department of Graduate and Post Graduate Studies of the
Faculty of Dentistry
Welcome to U of T's Department of Graduate and Postgraduate Dentistry, the
leading graduate education centre in oral health sciences in Canada. We offer a
research-intensive learning environment for advanced education of clinical specialists and
research scientists alike, and our graduate program is open to both those with a dental degree and
those who have graduated university and have majored in any subject that is applicable to
research in oral health.
Our graduate department offers educational programs leading to either a Ph.D. or a M.Sc., with
two streams depending on the career goals of the students: The M.Sc. / Dental Specialty stream
includes the most comprehensive menu of dental specialty programs in North America; it is
targeted to those whose career goal is to pursue clinical specialty practice with the extra
dimension of part-time teaching or research. High quality, accredited specialty education is
combined with a research thesis at the masters level. Students pursuing a dental specialty may
also combine their program with a Ph.D. if their goal is to concentrate on an academic career.
