Celtic Studies: Scholarships & Awards

The following scholarships are available to students in the Celtic Studies Program.

The Anna Mary Bridget Loftus Scholarship

Value: $800 - $1,000
Established by the estate of Anna Mary Bridget Loftus, these scholarships
are intended to provide financial assistance to St. Michael's College
full-time student s of any year level.  
Preference will be given to students  enrolled in the Celtic Studies program.

Criteria:
Applicants must be in good academic standing and must have demonstrated financial need. Student receiving Ontario Student Assistance Program funding; Canada Student Loan, or other government student aid will be given priority; however other cases of financial need will be considered. This scholarship will be credited to the recipients’ tuition fees.

The Irene J. McGovern and John Ward McGovern Scholarship

Open to students registered at St Michael's College only.

(2008 Fall – 2009 Winter Sessions)
Value: $5,000
Criteria: A bequest of Irene J. McGovern and John Ward, this scholarship will be awarded to a St. Michael's College student enrolling in the second or any subsequent year of an undergraduate program, and whose course of study involves a concentration or major focus in Celtic Studies.  Student must have a high academic achievement, particularly in the areas of Celtic History and Literature.

St. Michael's College Scholarships for Summer Study

(Open to all students in the Faculty of Arts and Science who are registered in Celtic Studies courses)

Value: $2,500

Criteria: Candidates are in the Celtic Studies program and wish to further their studies of Celtic culture by attending summer schools, or pursuing an approved course of study overseas.

Scholarships for summer study are also available from the St. Patrick's Benevolent Society of Toronto, Celtic Arts of Canada, and The St. Andrew's Society of Toronto. Please contact the Celtic Studies Office at St. Michael's College.

The Eileen Allen Bequest

Value: $1,500

Criteria: A bequest from Eileen Allen, these awards are available for students in the Celtic Studies program to attend the Annual Conference of the Canadian Association for Irish Studies. This year’s conference will be held at St. Michael’s College, University of Toronto, May 28-31, 2008. Information as it becomes available can be found at www.irishstudies.ca

Denis Leyne Famine Studies Scholarship

Value: $500

Criteria: This award is open to all undergraduate or graduate students in the Celtic Studies Program, either to:

  1. an undergraduate student who write the best essay in Famine Studies
    in a Celtic Studies course (no application necessary). The professor of the particular course will determine the selection of the best essay

    - or -

  2. a graduate or undergraduate student who needs money for research in Famine Studies (study of famines anywhere in the world) and who is connected with the Celtic Studies Program.
