Concurrent Education: Religious Education

New Program

Over the past three years, St Michael’s College has been working with the Faculty of Arts and Science and OISE/UT to establish a concurrent education program in Religious Education. This program aims to provide religion teachers for Catholic high schools in Ontario. The program is now fully approved and will be enrolling students in 2008.

First year students beginning their studies in the Faculty of Arts and Science in fall 2007 will be able to enrol in the program at the end of their first year.

Unlike the consecutive program (a 4-year honours degree followed by a 1-year bachelor of education) the concurrent program integrates subject education and teacher training over five years. Students study for two degrees simultaneously:

Students will combine their academic study with experiential learning and community service. Their program will include placements and internships alongside experienced teachers in Ontario schools, and courses which include opportunities to volunteer within a social service agency or non-governmental organization at home or abroad.

Where should I begin?

The required course for the program is: SMC103Y Catholicism.

We recommend that you take this course in first year; if you do not take it in first year, it can still be taken in second year

Program requirements:

EIGHT full courses or their equivalent, at least two at 300+ series:

You do not have to be a St Michael’s College student to enrol in St. Michael’s College programs; the programs are open to all students in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto.

Program focus

The program will be focused on preparing leaders in Catholic education:
