Continuing Education: Literature
Instructor: JoAnna Dutka, Ph.D. Professor Emerita, University of Toronto
Something like a historical fi ction; something like a gothic romance; something like a religious allegory – above all, a tragic love story with unforgettable characters, dramatic situations, philosophical concerns, and poetic beauty. The poem will be read in Middle English, unless good translations are readily available; recommended texts will be suggested. Slides and films will be shown where appropriate; time permitting, we may consider Shakespeare’s version of the same story.

Henry James succeeded in becoming the great moral portrait painter of the novel. His “portraits” have staying power and have been transposed smoothly into the complicated keys of theatre and film. Think, for instance, of The Turn of the Screw, The Bostonians and The Wings of the Dove. Few authors writing in English have had such infl uence over the art of the novel. The portraits James paints are celebrated for their uncanny understanding of human nature. In this course we will read and refl ect upon Daisy Miller, Washington Square, The Heiress (in theatre and film versions), The American and The Portrait of a Lady, not only relishing James’ famous style, but also following him through the labyrinth of human fears and desires.
