PPF1-F Native, Jesuit and French: Culture Shock in 17th-Century Canada, Part 11

This course is a continuation of Native, Jesuit and French, Part 1, offered in the spring of 2007. A general overview and recap will be offered for new participants. Part 11 will take us to Huronia from the crisis of 1637-1641 and the founding of Sainte-Marie (today near Midland), to the intensifi cation of the Iroquois wars in the 1640s, the deaths of Jean de Brebeuf and other Jesuits, and the destruction of the Huronia-based missions.

PPF2-F Present at the Creation: Four ROM Lives Great institutions are founded by great people.

Instructor: Dennis Duffy taught English literature at the University of Toronto and continues to offer lectures on Canadian cultural, historical and literary subjects. He has delighted audiences in Ireland, India and Spain, as well as in the St. Michael’s College Continuing Education program.

Through the lives and careers of four major fi gures – Sir Edmund Walker, Charles Trick Currelly, George Crofts and Mrs. Sarah Warren - learn about the social and cultural forces behind the Royal Ontario Museum’s founding and early success.

PPF3-F St. Michael’s Celebrates its Classic Sports History

Instructor: Larry Colle. Member of the Society for International Hockey Research and graduate of both St. Michael’s College School and the University of St. Michael’s College Past, Present, Future.

This course, now in its sixth year, celebrates over 150 years of athletic excellence at St. Michael’s College School and the rich sports traditions of the University of St. Michael’s College. The challenges presented to Catholic institutions while maintaining ethical standards in highly charged competitive situations both past and present will be a prime topic. We will discuss the College School’s hockey history from 1906 onwards, a period which has produced over 170 NHL players. Archival fi lm footage from the 1930s to the 1960s will be presented. There will be fi eld trips to St. Michael’s Majors/Buzzers hockey games. However, all aspects of St. Michael’s sports history including basketball and track and fi eld will be covered. The course will also feature the history of athletics at the University of St. Michael’s College including its storied football and hockey traditions and the infl uence of Basilian Fathers Henry Carr and David Bauer.
