About this Guide

This finding guide describes the processed archival material in the Henri J.M. Nouwen Archives and Research Collection. This material was originally donated to the Yale Divinity School Library by Henri Nouwen in 1975, and remained in that collection until January 2000. In January, it was released to Sr. Sue Mosteller, the Literary Executrix of Nouwen's estate, and donated with other material from L'Arche Daybreak to the John M. Kelly Library. Until this transfer occurred, material was added periodically by Henri Nouwen and then, following his death in 1996, by the Henri Nouwen Literary Centre. This finding guide was prepared by Martha Smalley at the Yale Divinity School Library and has been modified by Gabrielle Earnshaw, Curator, The Henri Nouwen Archives and Research Collection.

Please note: Records recently transferred from L'Arche Daybreak are being processed (i.e. records are being brought under control through arrangement and description) and are not open to the public at this time.

Scope and Content

The material described here includes: 9.12 m of textual records, 119 audiocassettes, 9 videocassettes, 1 photograph, and 8 artefacts. The oldest material dates from 1910 (articles published by Anton Boisen and collected by Henri Nouwen) however, most material was created between the years 1964-1996. The predominant language is English, however there are some manuscripts and others writings in Dutch.

Generally, this finding guide describes material related to Nouwen's writing and teaching. Lecture notes, classroom hand-outs, research and notes enable the researcher to trace the roots and direction of his thought. In addition, there are more than fifty short manuscripts (published and unpublished) written by Nouwen for sermons, addresses, lectures, retreat leadership etc., as well as twenty-two book length manuscripts of published and unpublished work. Some of this material is hand-written and/or annotated. A large collection of more than one hundred non-commercial audio tapes are also available of Nouwen speaking at conferences, retreats, and other public engagements. A smaller collection is also available of non-commercial videocassettes. Personal papers such as Nouwen's curriculum vitae, retreat notes and awards are included, as well as material such as obituaries, memorials and other material collected about Nouwen's death.

The papers are complimented by research material collected by Nouwen on the work of Anton Boisen, Seward Hiltner and Thomas Merton for his own study and teaching. Files of writing by and about Boisen and Seward Hiltner cover many aspects of the field of pastoral psychology during the period 1910-1977. A smaller file of material by and about Thomas Merton reflects Nouwen's deep interest in Merton's life and thought.

The papers are arranged into the following series:

All series and sub series are arranged chronologically, with undated material following the dated material. Dates contained in square brackets indicate an estimated date.

Except for noted items, access is open. However, researchers must submit a Research Request Form before access is granted. Reproduction restrictions apply to all audio and videocassettes as well as some other material.

SERIES III: Collected Research Material. – 1910-1975.

50.25 cm of textual material. – 1 photograph; b&w, 7 x 7 cm. – 5 audiocassettes.

This series contains research material collected by Nouwen on the work of Anton Boisen, Seward Hiltner and Thomas Merton for his own study and teaching. Files of writing by and about Boisen and Seward Hiltner cover many aspects of the field of pastoral psychology during the period 1910-1977. A smaller file of material by and about Thomas Merton reflects Nouwen's deep interest in Merton's life and thought. Represented in Category D, "Others", are unidentified students, Thomas Hora and Harrison Smith. The series is divided into the following sub series:

In nearly all cases, the material within each sub-category is arranged chronologically.

Series III. A. Anton T. Boisen. – 1910-1975; predominantly 1930-1975.25 cm of textual material. – 1 photograph; b&w, 5 x 7 cm.

This sub-series contains articles, and other material written by Boisen, as well as materials used by Boisen in the classroom including case-studies compiled Boisen to teach students. Included in this sub-series are unpublished manuscripts written by Henri Nouwen on many different topics related to Anton Boisen (see II.A.8). It is likely Nouwen wrote these while a fellow in the program for Religion and Psychiatry at the Menniger Clinic in Topeka, Kansas from 1964-1966. An alphabetical listing of the published articles by Boisen is available. This sub-series is arranged in the following sub-sub-series:

Biographical note: Anton Boisen (1876-1965) is known as the founder of the clinical pastoral education movement. Prior to pastoral education, Boisen studied Forestry at Yale School of Forestry and entered the Forestry Service in 1905. Later he attended Union Theological Seminary from 1908 to 1911. Of great interest to Nouwen was his use of the case-study method for treating mental health patients. Boisen developed this method using his own psychotic episodes as problem-solving experiences. Boisen taught chaplains and others engaged in pastoral counseling at the Clinical Training of Theological Students which he founded in 1930. Boisen's major books are Exploration of the Inner World (1936), Religion in Crisis and Custom (1945), and his autobiography, Out of Depths (1960) which details five psychotic episodes occurring between 1908 and 1935.

Series III. A. 1. Boisen's Case Studies. –[1924-1930?]. – 2 cm of textual material.

Contain copies of Anton Boisen's case studies. They are arranged alphabetically by name. Also includes case studies written by Boisen of historical figures such as Kierkegaard and St. Theresa. Nouwen has written short notes on some of this material.

Contains notes and manuscripts written by Nouwen about Anton Boisen. Item #31 167 refers to George Albert Coe (1862-1951) an important contributor to religious education in the United States. The estimated dates for this material is based on the understanding that Nouwen began his interest in Boisen at the Menniger Clinic and this interest was passed on to his students while a teacher at Yale Divinity School. It is not known precisely when he wrote this material. Some of it was published in 1966.
