Job Description

Dons are senior undergraduate and graduate students who live in residence and are responsible for supervising a residence house. Appointed by the Dean of Students, the Dons serve a vital function within the residence as well as the College at large. Most importantly, they are responsible for maintaining order within their assigned house by ensuring that students comply with the Rules of Residence. Dons are also expected to foster a sense of community and common identity within their houses, to lead by example, and to take an active interest in both the social and academic success of their residents. Other duties include acting as academic adviser, tutor, prefect, event organizer, moral and personal instructor, and representative of the College. Dons may be asked to assist the Dean in educating residents in such areas as study skills, alcohol and drug awareness, and human rights issues. They may also be called upon to assist the Dean with the day to day administration of the residence.

Qualifications & Compensation

DonsSt. Michael's expects its Dons to be individuals of intelligence, integrity, common sense and leadership. They must be enrolled in at least their 4’th year of full time studies at UofT and are expected to have achieved a high level of academic success. The successful candidate will also have a full understanding of and a willingness to support the mission of St. Michael's College as a Catholic University federated with the University of Toronto. In return for their services, Dons are provided room and board for the academic year in one of the 16 houses that comprise the SMC Residence.

Once you have the application package, complete the Donship Application Form and enclose with it, or have forwarded, the following:

  1. An up-to-date transcript or statement of results of your university marks.
  2. A résumé outlining your previous employment, academic history, current or past leadership positions, and any extra-curricular activities which you think would be pertinent.
  3. A one page statement outlining the reasons why you would make a successful Don and explaining how your aptitudes and attributes would benefit the residence community at St. Michael's College. Be sure to include your name, the date, and your signature.
  4. One letter of reference, preferably from someone who can comment on how your particular skills and abilities would translate to the specific duties of a Don.

The deadline for receipt of applications for the 2007-2008 academic year is February 28th, 2008.

Please note that not all applicants will be interviewed. A selection committee will determine a short list of candidates who will be interviewed in mid-March.
