Phone / Cable / Internet Service | Study Hall and the John M. Kelly Library | The SMC Weight Room | Mail Service | Parking
Telephone
All residents will receive their own phone
on the College’s switchboard, complete
with voicemail and free local calling. Long distance
calls will require a calling card. The mail phone
line to reach students is: 416-926-1664 followed
by the appropriate 4 digit extension.
Cable TV
All residence rooms are wired for cable TV, giving
residents the opportunity to subscribe to regular
and specialty-channel television service. Please
note that cable service is not included in the
cost of residence, and must be arranged directly
with the local cable service provider (Rogers
Cable). To order your cable service ahead
of time you will need to tell the cable company
your house and room assignment (available to admitted
residents on our website in the third week of
August). For more details, see our final move-in
instructions, mailed to all incoming residents
in August. (Please note: because all our rooms
are used by conference guests during the summer,
you cannot have your cable service activated before
Labour Day).
Internet Access
All of the rooms in residence are equipped with high speed internet access. Most of the rooms contain traditional wire connections, with the exception of the Historic
houses which are wireless (please see below.) Internet access through
the university network (or Resnet)
is included in the cost of residence. For more
details, see the special Resnet section
of our website.
Historic Houses: The Historic Houses are the only residence buildings equipped with wireless high speed internet (the other buildings have traditional wiring for internet connections). Residents of the historic houses will need to have a "g series 80 2 11 g" wireless card for their computer in order to connect. These cards should be available at any computer store and cost approximately $30.
The John M. Kelly Library (St Michael's College own library) is located at the heart of the campus, just steps from all our residence buildings. The John M. Kelly library offers the largest public-access computer facility outside of Robarts Information Commons, a reference and periodicals collection, photocopy and laser printing facilities, study space for hundreds of students, seminar rooms, and a large reading room (which stays open until midnight for most of the school year!). During the busy end-of-term periods, the ground floor of the Kelly Library (which includes the reading room, the reference collection, and photocopy, printing, and computer facilities) is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Kelly Library is also the home to the SMC Writing Center and Math Aid Center, as well as many other special collections and institutes. Please see the Library's home page for more details about their services.
The SMC Residence has its very own weight room which is open to all SMC residents who purchase a key from the mail desk. A key for the academic term costs $20 with the proceeds going towards the purchase of new equipment and general improvements to the gym. The weight room is open from 6:00 a.m. until midnight, seven days a week and is located in the basement of Alumni Hall (room #104) at 121 St. Joseph Street. The gym inventory includes:

Mail Desk - Hours of Operation.
The USMC mail desk is located on the ground floor of Elmsley Hall (south end) at 81 St. Mary Street. It operates from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday and is closed on weekends and holidays. Mail is delivered at 3:00 p.m. daily, Monday through Friday. There is no mail delivery over the Christmas holidays.
The mailing address for all members of the SMC Residence, no matter which building you live in, is :
[Your Name]
[Your Box #], 81 St. Mary Street,
Toronto, Ontario (ON),
M5S 1J4,
Canada
Each resident is assigned a unique mailbox number. To help speed deliveries, your mailbox number (not your room number) should always be used as a prefix to the street address by anyone who will be sending you mail. If you are a student who goes by two names (e.g. English and Chinese), please make sure that those sending you mail include the name by which you are registered in the residence.
Your mail box number will be available from our website in the third week of August. For more details, please see our final move-in instructions, mailed to all incoming residents in August.
If you receive a package or courier delivery which is too large for your mailbox, the mail desk attendant will place a special notice in your mailbox. You must present the notice to the attendant in order to pick up your package. (If the slip is lost, picture ID will suffice). To pick up a package for a friend you must have a written note of permission from your friend. Please notify the mail desk ahead of time if you intend to receive a large package (e.g. computer, etc.) as there is very little space for storage.
Unless you have made arrangements to live in residence for the summer (at SMC or Vic), your mailbox will be canceled on the last day of residence (in early May), and any mail received after that date will be returned to the sender. To make sure you don't miss any important mail when you leave residence, be sure notify all your correspondents (including UofT, SMC, and magazine subscriptions) of your new address. Change of Address Announcement Cards are available for free from your local post office.
Please note that due to the great number of students living at SMC, it is not possible to forward mail during the summer months, even if you are planning to return to residence in the fall. Residents should also be aware that Canada Post will not forward mail from a university residence - so standard 'mail forwarding' services are not available from the Post Office.
Due to the fact that UofT is an urban campus, parking is a very scarce commodity. As a result, at St. Mike’s all student-designated parking is reserved for commuter students who must drive into campus from outlying municipalities. Parking for residents is only available at the regular daily rate (there is no monthly rate – see Parking Services for pricing). However, most residents will quickly discover that being surrounded by three subway lines and a world-renowned transit system, occasions little need for a vehicle in downtown Toronto . We strongly advise against bringing a car to residence but if you do, your only option for on-campus parking will be through UofT Parking Services. Off-campus parking exists but is not supported by St. Mike's, it can be expensive and personal safety and car security should be considered.
