What is the SMC Resnet?

The SMC Residence Network (or SMC Resnet) is a high speed network that connects the SMC Residence to the University of Toronto network 'backbone' and the internet. Elmsley Hall (First Floor, Mallon House, McBrady House and Soulerin House), the Queen's Park Building (Fisher House, More House and Teefy House) and Sorbara Hall Student Residence (all floors) are all connected to the SMC Resnet. The Historic Houses are connected to the internet through a seperate wireless network operated by a private internet provider hired by St. Michael's College.

What can I do with the SMC Resnet?

The SMC Resnet provides high speed access to the Internet, the UofT, and other Resnet users. You can use the SMC Resnet to send and receive email, surf the web, transfer files, read newsgroups, chat, play games and share resources (like printers) with friends. In fact, using the SMC Resnet is just like using a commercial Internet service provider - but without the hourly, or monthly fee.

How do I get connected to the SMC Resnet?

Getting connected to the SMC Resnet is a simple three-step process:

  1. First, download a copy of the SMC Network Guide. This Guide explains everything you need to know about connecting your computer to the SMC Resnet, including what hardware you will need, how to configure your software, what the rules are, how to keep yourself secure, and what to do if you need technical assistance.
  2. After you arrive in residence you will need to physically connect your computer to the network (see Step 1 for instructions). Once you have done this a screen should automatically appear asking you to complete an online Network Use Agreement. This will have to be done before you will be able to connect to any external internet sites. You may also have to download anti-virus software which is available free of charge through UTORProtect.
  3. Once you have completed the on-line form and downloaded the appropriate software you should be ready to connect. If you have trouble getting connected or staying connected, please consult our Technical Support Section.
