The following is a list of tools and resources which may be helpful to residents using the SMC Resnet.
Essential Resources
IP Audit. The best way to monitor your bandwidth use.
UofT Network Operations. Check the status of the UofT network.
CNS Residence Networking Page. The University of Toronto Computing and Networking Services (CNS) is developing a comprehensive website for students who connect to the Internet from a campus residence. This website provides information about network policies, as well as information, tools and tips to help you monitor, limit and make the most of your bandwidth.
Internet Traffic Report. How's the Internet doing outside the UofT? Check the status of the whole Internet.
Policies governing the use of the SMC Resnet and UofT Information Technologies.
SMC Network Use Agreement. Everyone using the Residence network must sign a copy of this agreement.
UofT Policy on Internet Connection from Residence. This is the policy which enacted the 500 megabyte bandwidth limit.
University of Toronto Policy on the Appropriate Use of Information Technology. This policy governs all use of information technology by UofT faculty, staff and students. It is a part of the SMC Network Use Agreement.
University of Toronto Code of Student Conduct. Some infractions of the UofT Policy on the Appropriate Use of Information Technology fall under the Code of Student Conduct. The code outlines principles, offense, procedures and penalties.
SMC Residence Rules. Some infractions of the SMC Network Use agreement fall under the SMC Residence Rules.
Computer Security Resources
SANS. The SANS Institute is an international, cooperative organization of computer, network and security professionals. Produces security alerts, news bulletins, research projects and educational publications. Collaborates with the FBI and other international groups. Functions as an international assessment and response team.
CIAC. (Computer Incident Advisory Capability) An advisory service to the US government and general public in the area of computer and network security, fraud, hoaxes, etc. Functions as an advisory clearinghouse.
SARC. Symantec Anti-virus Research Center. Bulletins, alerts and tools for viruses and malicious code from Symantec. Provides of database of known viruses, worms, etc., as well as free removal tools for a variety of platforms.
SMC Network Administrator. Report any computer or network security concerns immediately to the SMC Network Administrator.
UofT Network Security. The network security department of CNS.
Firewall software. Every student connected to the SMC Resnet should be running a firewall. See the SMC Network Guide and the CNS website for recommendations on firewall software.
Anti-Virus Software. All students, faculty and staff at UofT can now run Norton Anti-Virus (a popular virus checker that runs on macs and pcs) for free! Its part of a new UofT service called UTORprotect. To get your free copy, just go to the UTORprotect website. Everyone connected to the SMC Resnet should be running anti-virus software.
