When do I have to accept the offer?
You have until May 28, 2008 to accept your offer. If you have already accepted another university’s offer and would like to change your mind, you may accept U of T’s offer and the previous acceptance will automatically be cancelled. You do this on-line through OUAC.
How do I know if I have received an admission scholarship?
Any scholarship offers would have been included in your offer of admission. Competition for admission scholarships at U of T is quite intense and some students who have received scholarships from other universities may not receive a scholarship at U of T. This is a reflection of how many well qualified applicants there are. There will be some scholarships for new students awarded at a later date. These scholarships require an application. More details regarding financial aid may be found at: http://www.utoronto.ca/stmikes/students/scholarships/scholarships_stmikes.html
I didn’t apply to residence on my application. Now I would like to stay in residence. How do I go about applying?
If you have been admitted to SMC but did not request residence on your original application and now want residence you should contact the SMC residence at 416-926-1300 x3247 or at smc.residence@utoronto.ca The SMC residence is co-educational(men and women) by floor. If you would like a spot in all women residence you should contact Loretto College at 416-925-2833 or loretto.college@utoronto.ca
Both residences will do their best to accommodate you, but students who have a residence guarantee will receive priority.
How can I switch admission categories? (eg. Humanities to Life Science)
Once the application deadline has passed, you are not able to switch admissions categories.
If I’m in the humanities and social science stream can I still take science courses?
If you have the prerequisite high school science background you can take a science course once you’re here, even if you are not admitted as a science student. However, during the first round of enrolment, students in a particular admission category (like Life Sciences) may be given priority for certain first year courses (like BIO150Y1) or excluded from other first year courses. These restrictions ensure that first year students in particular admission categories are guaranteed a spot in the first year courses which they require. These restrictions are removed during the second round of enrolment and any first year student can enrol in any first year course as long as space is available. The specific date for the beginning of the second round of enrolment is in the sessional timetable. Link to the Faculty of Arts & Science http://www.artsci.utoronto.ca/current/undergraduate/course
Do I need math to major in psychology?
Yes. Students on the St. George campus specializing or majoring in psychology must have high school calculus to enrol in these programs. Psychology on the St. George campus is a Science NOT a Social Science program.
Do I need math to major in economics?
Yes. Students on the St. George campus specializing or majoring in economics must have high school calculus and a second senior level high school math course to enrol in these programs.
How/when do I choose my courses?
The earliest date you can enrol in courses is July 28, 2008. The calendar is online at: http://www.artsci.utoronto.ca/current/undergraduate/course or can be picked up in person at the Registrar’s Office, 121 St. Joesph Street, Room 207. http://www.utoronto.ca/stmikes/students/contact.html
What happens if I don’t have the high school prerequisite to take a first-year course?
You should not take the course. Not only are prerequisites checked and enforced by many departments but it is unwise to take a course for which you lack the preparation. Courses with high school pre-requites are typically in sciences and languages. You should always make a point of checking your course pre-requisites carefully in the current calendar.
What does “recommended preparation” mean?
It means that you will be better equipped to handle the course material having taken the recommended course. Recommended courses are not mandatory and that are not checked.
I’ve taken some International Baccalaureate (IB) exams at my school. Am I eligible for transfer credit?
If you earn a grade of at least 5 for each Higher Level subject, you will be eligible for transfer credit at the first year level. No credit is given to native speakers who have taken language courses. http://www.adm.utoronto.ca/adm/adm_other_req/tc_info.htm
I’ve taken some Advanced Placement exams at my school. Am I eligible for transfer credit?
If you achieve a mark of 4 or better you may be eligible for transfer credit depending on the course. Arts and Science St. George offers a maximum of 3 transfer credits for AP’s. Notification will come in July and they will be granted automatically, as long as students have submitted their final results. All credits are granted at the first year introductory level. http://www.adm.utoronto.ca/adm/adm_other_req/tc_info.htm
When do I register?
Registration is actually two different activities – selecting courses and paying or deferring fees. You won’t be registered until you have done both. The first round of course selection for first-year students begins over the web at ROSI on July 28, 2008. Once you have selected courses you are then in a position to pay or defer fees. You are registered once you have chosen your courses and paid your fees.
What about fees? How much is tuition? How much is residence?
The total academic fee for students entering Arts and Science, St. Michael’s College in September 2007 was $5737.56
The fees for 2008 may be found online at http://www.fees.utoronto.ca/session/fallwinter0809.htm
Residence fees can vary, depending on meal plans and college. Without meals, residence is about $5,000 for 8 months, with meals $6,000-$9,000 (depending on meal plan). Overall students should expect to pay between $12,000 and $15,000.

I've heard that fees for computer science and commerce are higher than for other arts and science programs
In first year, all Arts and Science students, including those who intend to pursue commerce and computer science programs, pay the same tuition. In second year, once students are admitted to program, computer science and commerce students will pay a higher fee. The fee for commerce students entering second year last September was $ 10,153.56; for computer science $8,300.56.
What if I want to change my college?
You should contact the registrar’s office of the college you want to switch to and see if it is possible. Students interested in transferring to SMC from another college should contact Andrea McGee at andrear.mcgee@utoronto.ca with your request. You should explain why you would like to belong to SMC. Requests from new students will be reviewed in mid-June.
When do I choose my program(s)
You will enrol in one or more programs (minors, majors, specialists) at the end of the semester in which you pass your fourth full credit. For most new students who pass 4 or 5 course in first year, this means that you will choose your programs at the end of first year.
What if I want to defer my acceptance for a year?
You must first accept the offer of admission, then write a letter to our office of Admissions and Awards requesting deferred status and include your final grades. The letter must include an outline of your plans. Deferred admission is not available to students who plan on studying at another post secondary institution before they begin studies at the U of T. You will receive a letter from Admissions and Awards in early August advising you of your status.
Does the Faculty of Arts and Science offer a co-op program?
Students in the Faculty of Arts and Science on the St. George campus may take part in the Professional Experience Year (PEY) program, where students take a year off between third and fourth year to work in a company for 12-16 months. PEY is managed by the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering and the Arts and Science who participate are normally in computer science or commerce programs.
What is a T-Card and How do I get one?
Your T-Card is your University of Toronto student card and your official University of Toronto identification. You will use it as a library card, athletic facilities membership card and general identification. Students who have accepted their offer of admission should go to the T-Card web site http://www.utoronto.ca/tcard/ for their hours of operation and location. Most newly admitted students will be able to obtain their TCard in the beginning of June.
