Ontario Student Assistance Program
The Ontario Student Assistance Program is the main source of financial assistance for Ontario residents who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents.
Do you qualify for government financial aid? Check it out! Check out the OSAP Aid Estimator at http://osap.gov.on.ca.
OSAP assistance comes in the form of loans granted by the Federal (Canada Student Loan) and the Provincial (Ontario Student Loan) governments. The loan arrives in the Office of the Registrar and Student Services as one document called the Canada-Ontario Integrated Student Loan.
The first portion of funding (60% of total) is disbursed starting on the first of classes from the Office of the Registrar and Student Services in Alumni Hall. The second portion (40% of total) is disbursed in January. As a result of these disbursements, many students will choose to pay their college tuition fees in two instalments and learn to budget creatively. If students choose to pay their fees in two instalments, it is important to note that monthly interest will be charged on the balance owing.
Students must be registered in 60% of a full course load or greater (i.e. 3.0 full-course equivalents or more). Students with documented permanent disabilities are eligible for funding with a courseload of 40% or greater (2.0 full-course equivalents or more).
OSAP does not allow course loads to be averaged over two terms. Students must be registered in at least a course load of 60% or greater from September to December and 60% or greater from January to April to be eligible for OSAP funding for both semesters. For example, if a student is enrolled in 80% of a full courseload in first term and 40% in second term, the courseloads cannot be averaged to equal 60%. In this case, a student would not be eligible for funding for the second term. Dropping below a 60% courseload in first term will affect the January portion of funding. Students will not qualify for the second portion of their funding.
We encourage all first-year students to apply early (i.e. early June) and returning students to apply by the end of May.

Change of Status/Dropping Courses
Any change of status, be it financial, academic or family-oriented must be reported to the Admissions and Awards office, in writing, at 315 Bloor Street West. They, in turn, will notify the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU). A failure to do so may result in an "overpayment." An overpayment may occur for a number of reasons such as: an increase in resources, an error in the original assessment, an early withdrawal from studies, a change in course load, verification of income/family’s income with Canada Customs and Revenue Agency records. An overpayment in one year could affect the amount of OSAP awarded in subsequent sessions. Two overpayments (uncorrected) could cause a student to be permanently ineligible for OSAP. If at any point during the school year there is a change in course load, contact Admissions and Awards at U of T, 315 Bloor Street West, immediately so that the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities is aware of the change(s).
Queen Elizabeth II Aiming for the Top Scholarships
The Queen Elizabeth II Aiming for the Top Scholarships are automatically awarded to first-year students based on grades and financial need. First-Year students who wish to be considered for a Queen Elizabeth II Aiming for the Top Scholarship must apply for this scholarship through their OSAP application by early June. Make sure the QEII section of the OSAP application is completed. Students must be attending university full-time in order to qualify.
